Cu aproximativ 500 de ani în urmă, în timpul dinastiei Chosun, Coreea se lăuda cu o structură socială rigid ierarhizată și dominată de bărbați. Situată în această perioadă, „Giuvaerul Palatului” se bazează pe o poveste adevărată despre o fată legendară pe nume Jang-Geum care a devenit prima femeie care a fost medicul suprem regal al vremurilor sale.
În ciuda condiției sale modeste, ca fată de clasă joasă în societatea dominată de bărbați, Jang-Geum a depășit o serie de discriminări sociale și s-a impus ca bucătar regal, devenind ulterior medicul regal, apoi în cele din urmă medicul responsabil de sănătatea regelui.
